45 Things That Are Beautiful Besides Love

1.    The cool side of the pillow. The first few seconds after I flip over my pillow and touch my cheeks to the cool side are the best moments of domestic bliss a human could have in his entire life.

2.    When I realise there are still five minutes left for the next alarm to go off and I put every ounce of dedication into getting the best sleep of my life in those five minutes.

3.    Dropping something from my hand only to catch it midway during free fall and filling myself with heroic pride for a few moments.

4.    When I finally learn the lyrics of a song I love and begin to appreciate the inner meaning of the words beyond just the music.

5.    Covering my palm with Fevicol and peeling it off once it dries up.

6.    Eating a rasgulla whole just so to prevent all the sweet water squeezing out of the ball when I cut it with my spoon.

7.    The smell of -

an old novel

newly xeroxed paper

petrol

new shoes

shoe polish

my blanket

8.    The smile of a random stranger when I cross him on a street when I'm having a bad day.

9.    Asking for a small piece of butter from my mom so that the last portion of my bhaaji tastes extra buttery.

10.The "Mai Tera..." part of "Kalank"

The female part of "Afreen Afreen"

The "Teri Nazaron Mein..." part of "Agar Tum Saath Ho"

11.Cute, fluffy, cuddly teddy bears.

12.Pressing a swimming board underwater in the swimming pool, placing my feet on top of the board and doing a bouncey jump as the board yeets out of the water like a Jericho missile.

This is a swimming board

13.Lying down on one side on my classroom desk and tapping the tabletop to listen to the universe hidden deep inside the wood.

14.Making cartoons on a fog-filled car window.

15.Looking at my friend and smiling at each other because both of us thought of an inside joke at the same time.

17.When someone in the train agrees to take my middle berth in exchange for his upper berth.

18.Placing my cheeks against a TV screen and feeling my skin hair sticking to the screen.

19.The lovely sense of satisfaction after finishing a heartwarming novel. This is always followed by an emotional hangover for the next few days when I continue feeling happy about how much I care for a fictional character. Emotional novels are REAL TEARJERKERS and it takes immense effort along with a week-long self-counselling therapy to get over a beautiful story. Sue me.

20.Cricket with a clipboard bat.

21.Finding that perfectly muddy puddle so that I can chhab-chhaba-chhab my way to the other side.

24.The sheer joy of getting a window seat in the train so that I can spend the entire journey looking out at the farms and the trees with absolutely no care about anything else in the world.

25.The large piece of paneer in my sabji that I leave on purpose until I finish my meal. I will then go on to eat that piece as slowly as possible, savouring every single molecule of paneer as if that’s the last paneer I’ll ever have in my life.

26.The pain of exhaustion that screams of euphoria after I finish my daily exercise.

27.Holding a plastic bottle with my neck, then quickly turning it upside down to create a water tornado inside the bottle.

28.The oozing of the egg yolk when I poke a soft-boiled egg.

29.That sigh of content after I learn a new skill and smile with the realisation that life isn't so plain and boring and monotonous after all.

30.Walking barefoot on grass.

31.Those regular trips to the fantasy world that I've created inside my head. I'm the hero of a story which is a comedy, a Shakespearean drama and a Rohit Shetty action film all at the same time.

32.When I finally find someone who has seen that same obscure series that I have, and I realise that I can finally share all those references and trivia I have been collecting and keeping to myself since ages.

Ps it has a word and that is "PETRICHOR". I love the word already.

37.The first touch of steaming hot water when I go for a bath on an extremely cold day.

38.When that song comes to my mind at that moment.

39.Thrusting your hand inside a sack of rice and feeling the cool rice grains rubbing against your skin.

40.Filling the pocket between your thighs with water while bathing so that the water forms a curvy triangle between your legs and your stomach, and then opening your legs to watch the water fall with a splash on the ground.

Dancing is therapeutic. Dancing alone in your room like a crazy person, even more so.

45.When I apply lipstick and foundation and maskara on my friends and giggle at how funny it is that I know how to apply lipstick and foundation and maskara on my friends.

Ps. Credits to my friend Ojasvini for recommending points 39-43.

  5. Nupur's "What is wrong with you?", "You stupid", "Why are you so dumb?" and all other catchphrases deserve an article of their own.
